This is my own write-yourself-into -a story but since I am a poet this will have to do instead. I would like to dedicate this work to Alexa for touching me so deeply as we met so briefly before passing into the night. Standard disclaimers apply yadda- yadda.

Passings In The Night

by Riana

the echo of footsteps on crumbling concrete
etched into the silence of the cold of midnight:
in a deserted alley, steady and solitary
a man walks unheeded
with a burden on his soul only known by him
that follows behind him with his shadow
lost in a strange world, pursued
by shadows, by nightmares or by time itself
alone in the dark night not yet broken by strife
he clings to his ghosts but pretends they're not there
repeating mantra to soothe the shadows
but they remain,
mid-sentence, he stops and he turns, tensed
and sees the pale lamplight from my window,
a young dreaming face watching and I met his eyes
strange silver eyes, one oddly bright
reflected maybe from a passing car
or old sorrows
coming out into the night
he smiles, turns back, and walks away
disappearing into the dark.
